Positional football: SC Paderborn are the only German professional club who, over the last six years up to December 2019, finished a season in only two possible table positions: either 2nd or 18th. In 2018/19 they finished 2nd in Bundesliga 2 and were promoted. In 2017/18 they also finished 2nd, this time in the 3. Liga.
Before that came two 18th places in a row - 2016/17 in the 3. Liga and 2015/16 in Bundesliga 2. Their first Bundesliga season, 2014/15, also ended in 18th. One year before that they had finished 2nd in Bundesliga 2 and gone up. The consequence, as Der Tagesspiegel joked on 31 July 2019: “Either relegation or the Champions League.”
