Six hundred curious spectators came to his first training session, and after a 2-0 win over Braunschweig he seemed fully accepted.\n\nBut the hype did not last.
After five months and eventually twelve league matches without a win, the once enthusiastic president pulled the plug. His press conference announcing the dismissal has become legendary.\n\nThe constant media circus generated by scandal figure Effenberg - including a revoked driving licence and missing coaching badge - combined with the lack of sporting success to bring his quick end. Paderborn gave the former world-class player the chance to break into professional coaching, and he failed to take it.
Quite unlike several of his predecessors: SCP has often functioned as a coaching school, propelling Jos Luhukay, Roger Schmidt, André Schubert and André Breitenreiter to the Bundesliga.
